INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis may see its first snow of the season starting Thursday. Because of this, officials with the Indianapolis Department of Public Works are preparing the roads for the potential winter weather.

Indy DPW crews will deploy starting at 11 p.m. on Wednesday and through the day on Thursday for the incoming snow.

”Our DPW Operations crews are deploying a dozen drivers across four trucks overnight starting at 11 p.m.," said DPW Public Information Officer Auboni Hart. "They will work until 7 a.m. when our new shift will come in. Both shifts will salt the roads and clear the roads of any potential buildup."

Crews are taking proactive measures to address the snowfall and "minimize potential disruptions to morning commutes" even though freezing pavement temperatures are not expected.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety of Indianapolis residents during the first weather event of the season,” Indy DPW Director Brandon Herget said. “Our crews will be working diligently through the night and into the morning to keep our roads clear and safe.”

The Indiana Department of Transportation is also sending drivers out Thursday night.

”Specifically, in Marion County, we're going to have 30 drivers come in tonight around 8 p.m. and they're going to be patrolling the 465 area from tonight until tomorrow morning," said Kyleigh Cramer with INDOT.

Another 35 drivers will also come in Thursday morning to take over for the overnight crew.

There are also several big construction projects still closing and shifting lanes. Cramer asks drivers to pay attention as the weather impacts driving conditions. Construction projects should switch to winter configurations soon, though.

"What folks can expect in the next few weeks is what it's going to be for the whole winter," said Cramer.

Individuals driving during and after the snowfall are encouraged to abide by the following safe driving reminders:

  • Allow extra time for travel
  • Maintain safe distances from snowplow trucks
  • Clear your vehicle of any snow or other visual obstructions before driving
  • Drive at slower speeds
  • Leave extra distance between other vehicles on the road
  • Pack bags of sand, blankets, water, and extra clothes
