TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — An Illinois man, imprisoned at the Terre Haute Federal Correctional Complex has been charged in relation to a stabbing death of a fellow inmate.
According to a release from the United States Attorney's Office Southern District of Indiana, Otha Don Watkins III, 42, of Cairo, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and possessing contraband in prison by a federal grand jury.
Watkins is accused of stabbing and killing Carlos Shelton on April 14, 2023 during a fight. Prosecutors say the knife used in the killing was an improvised knife, also known as a shank.
The FBI and the Special Investigation Services branch of the Bureau of Prisons reportedly investigated the incident.
Watkins, who is currently in custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons could get an additional 8 years in prison if convicted.
