INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis police officer is in the hospital after a driver reportedly struck them with a car on the city's near north side Thursday. A second officer then shot the suspect driver, IMPD said.
IMPD crews were called around 4 p.m. to the 1500 block of N. Meridian Street to check the welfare of a person inside a car parked near a CVS at the intersection of N. Meridian and 16th Street. Around 4:30 p.m., EMS crews were called to the area for an "unsafe gunshot scene."
Officer William Young with IMPD said that responding officers arrived to find an unresponsive adult male inside a car near the front of the business's drive-thru.
IMPD said officers were told by store employees on the scene that they were also unsuccessful in making contact with the individual before police arrived.
Officers approached the vehicle and knocked on the window multiple times while activating their sirens and shining flashlights in the car to get the driver to respond, according to IMPD.
After approximately four minutes, the adult male driver reportedly opened the passenger side window and made contact with police.
One of the officers asked the suspect if he was alright while instructing him to place the vehicle in park and unlock it. The suspect briefly exited the vehicle while the two responding officers continued speaking with him and checking on his status.
One of the officers then asked the suspect to walk toward the back of the vehicle to make sure he was okay. At this time, the driver's side door was still open, IMPD said.
IMPD said the suspect allegedly ignored these instructions and got back into his vehicle. At this point, an officer grabbed the suspect's arm while continuing to instruct him to leave the vehicle.
At this time, the suspect allegedly put the vehicle into reverse, pinning the officer between the vehicle and a wall. The officer was struck with the driver's side door, which was still open.
The officer who was standing on the suspect's passenger side proceeded to discharge their firearm, striking the suspect at least once.
Following this incident, the suspect complied with the verbal commands to exit the vehicle and laid on the ground.
Police immediately provided medical aid to the suspect and applied a tourniquet to the individual's arm.
The officer who was struck by the car was taken to an area hospital for treatment and is reportedly in good condition. The driver who was shot was taken to a local hospital in stable condition and is awake and breathing, Ofc. Young said.
IMPD added that no uninvolved citizens or officers were injured during Thursday's incident.
Multiple officers who responded to the scene were equipped with body cameras that were activated before the shooting.
The officer who discharged their service weapon has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following any officer-involved shooting.
FOX59/CBS4 has crews on scene observed a large police presence after the shooting.
