INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indy man faces a federal prison sentence of up to 15 years after being convicted of illegally possessing firearms.
According to a Department of Justice release, 57-year-old Salam Abdul Ali was convicted by a federal jury after being found guilty of having illegal firearms in his possession. Ali was a previously convicted felon.
Court documents show that officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded on Jan. 28, 2024, to the residence in response to a domestic disturbance report. The release did not provide the street address.
The DOJ said officers arrived and spoke with a woman who told them she resided at the home with her children and that her ex-boyfriend, who was identified as Ali, reportedly threatened to shoot and kill her, her children and her brother.
A month later, investigators executed a search warrant at Ali's residence where they found five firearms, ammunition and firearm accessories.
Ali was present during the search and reportedly told police, "I got guns, I sure do."
Detectives later determined that Ali's previous name was Christopher Butler and that he had changed names after being convicted of murder in Marion County. Ali was sentenced to serve 60 years in prison.
Ali was released from state prison in 2013 and would be on the wrong side of the law again six years later when he was convicted in federal court for his role in a drug trafficking conspiracy and sentenced to serve time in federal prison.
Ali was on federal supervised release during his most recent arrest, according to the DOJ.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and IMPD led the investigation.
