GREENWOOD, Ind. — A Greenwood man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting at his stepfather and stepbrother as they drove away from an argument. The suspect reportedly told police he was high on Xanax and said "he was the bad guy."
Joseph Mak Davidson, 20, was arrested Sunday and charged with multiple felonies including attempted murder, battery and possession of a machine gun. Davidson has since been booked into Johnson County Jail on a $100,000 cash-only bond in relation to the Oct. 20 shooting.
Greenwood police officers were called Sunday morning to a domestic disturbance after a man called 911 reporting that his truck had been shot at, disabling the vehicle.
The man said his stepson, identified as Davidson, had shot at him after an argument at their house.
The man told officers that Davidson had arrived at the home the night before with two unknown friends, who he suspected to be carrying guns. The man said Davidson had been volatile with him before and that "he has told his friends that if he were to end up dead it would be because Davidson had killed him."
Court documents describe how Davidson began arguing with his mother on Sunday morning about having his friends stay at the house. The argument reportedly turned physical, and Davidson's stepfather intervened and attempted to calm Davidson down.
However, Davidson reportedly yelled at his friends to "get the switch" before telling his stepfather "I've got something for you." The stepfather told police he then grabbed his juvenile son - who was sleeping in an adjacent bedroom - and ran to his truck.
As the stepfather and son were driving away, Davidson reportedly stepped onto the front porch armed with a handgun and fired five shots toward the truck. Investigators later found five spent .45 caliber casings just outside the front door and several bullet holes in the truck and its tires.
Several witnesses described seeing Davidson then run back inside the house and upstairs as his mother yelled "you are going to go to prison!" A witness who was upstairs told police that Davidson said "a lot of heat is coming" and that he was "going to prison for a long time."
After speaking with the stepfather, officers went to the home where the argument began and found Davidson hiding in an upstairs bathroom. While being read his Miranda Rights, Davidson reportedly told officers he was "a big lawyer guy" and said he'd speak depending on what questions were asked.
Davidson reportedly told officers that he had "woke up to some bullshit" as his mother and stepfather were upset with his friends staying over. He said he "did not know what happened after that because he does drugs."
Specifically, Davidson told officers that he regularly takes Xanax and that he had taken approximately six bars of Xanax earlier that day. He reportedly admitted that he is not prescribed Xanax, but said he believes he should be.
Although Davidson never specifically admitted to shooting at his stepfather during the interview, police said he told them "he was the bad guy" and shrugged. Davidson also reportedly told officers that he would "beat the case" because his stepfather "is a dumb a**." He also reportedly expressed a dislike for both his stepfather and stepbrother, saying they mean "nothing to him."
During a search of Davidson's room, officers reportedly found a small handgun safe designed to look like a book titled "BEDTIME STORIES for UNEXPECTED GUESTS" authored by "WE THE PEOPLE." Inside, they found a .45 caliber magazine, a pink Glock switch and several rounds of .45 ammo.
Given the evidence gathered, Davidson was arrested and booked into the Johnson County Jail on the following charges:
- Attempted Murder - Level 1 Felony
- Criminal Reckless - Level 5 Felony
- Intimidation - Level 5 Felony
- Two counts
- Possession of a Machine Gun - Level 5 Felony
