COLUMBUS, Ind. — A woman and her husband were arrested after their 2-year-old was found badly bruised at a park in Columbus.

Hanna McBride, 25, and her husband, Jose Manuel Villeda Gomez, 22, have been arrested and preliminarily charged with the neglect of a dependent, a level 5 felony.

Officers from the Columbus Police Department were dispatched on Wednesday to Nexus Park at 2100 25th Street on the report of a 2-year-old boy having suspicious marks on him.

Upon arrival, investigators noted numerous red marks and bruises on the boy’s arms, face, and torso. Further medical evaluation found the child also had broken ribs.

Detectives believe many of the bruises and red marks were caused by the child being struck with a cord. The child was taken into protective custody and placed with a family member.

McBride and Villeda Gomez remain in the Bartholomew County Jail.
