HENRY COUNTY, Ind. — A juvenile was injured during a police chase in Henry County on Sunday.
According to a press release from Indiana State Police, a trooper observed a driver of a white Chevrolet passenger car speeding near miler marker 119 of Interstate 70 around 8 a.m. The trooper subsequently attempted to initiate a traffic stop with the driver.
The trooper's attempts were unsuccessful, as the driver fled the area southbound via State Road 3.
The chase also traversed U.S. Highway 40 and County Road 225 East before it ended on County Road 700 South. On CR 700 S, the driver — who was later identified as 30-year-old Kevin DaVante Kemp of Indianapolis — crashed in to a ditch.
After the crash, police apprehended Kemp.
Following a short investigation, police discovered a juvenile male passenger had been in the car with Kemp. Per ISP, the juvenile was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The juvenile was later transported from the scene to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Kemp preliminarily faces the following charges:
- Neglect of a dependent, a Level 3 Felony
- Resisting law enforcement, a Level 6 Felony
- Criminal recklessness, a Level 6 Felony
- Possession of marijuana, a Class A Misdemeanor
- Possession of Paraphernalia, a Class C Misdemeanor
In Indiana, the maximum penalty for a Level 3 Felony like neglect of a dependent is a 16-year prison sentence and a fine of up to $10,000.
According to Indiana State Police, the Henry County Sheriff's Department and the Indiana Department of Child Services assisted troopers during their investigation of the incident.
