HENRY COUNTY, Ind. — Two Henry County parents are facing neglect charges after their child died from a dresser falling on top of them, court documents show.
According to docs from a Henry County Circuit Court, Steven and Kimberleigh Howlett — 28 and 26, respectively — both face the charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, a Level 1 Felony.
The docs report that they abandoned their dependent "... after hearing a loud noise followed by hearing the victim crying." This child was trapped under a dresser that had fallen on top of them, unable to breathe. Court documents report that the Howletts did not immediately check on their child, which led to their death.
Online case records show that Steven and Kimberleigh Howlett have initial court hearings scheduled for Oct. 17. If convicted, they could face up to 40 years in prison.
