The strongest winds will accompany the heavier rainfall Friday evening
Rain and wind ramping up this evening. Gust to 42 mph is the highest through 4pm Friday. Even stronger gusts to nearly 60 mph are possible now through 8pm with steadier and heavier rain to fall. Just before 5pm a gust reached 58 mph in Columbus and these strong gusts are likely area-wide from 5pm through 10pm Friday. A HIGH WIND WARNING is in effect until 1am.
UPDATE: A peak gust of 68 mph has been recorded at Indianapolis International Airport just after 7pm
Remnants of Hurricane Helene have surged northwest into Tennessee and Kentucky late Friday. This brings an increase in wind and rain this evening. Peak rainfall coverage jumps to 90% by 8/9pm Friday. Rainfall amounts have been around a half inch but with additional heavier bans pivoting in this evening, additional rainfall of one inch or higher is possible. There will be a sharp cutoff to the rain after midnight.
Power outage is widespread in several states with nearly 1 million customers without power in South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina and Florida late Friday. As of 5pm, 13,000 customers were out in Indiana but likely rising later as stronger winds arrive.
