PORTAGE, Ind. -- An Indiana man has been sentenced to 17.5 years in prison after being found guilty of generating and possessing child sexual abuse.

The United States Department of Justice announced that Timothy Carpenter, 36, of Portage was sentenced Friday following an extensive investigation into his internet use that began in July 2022.

Carpenter was found guilty of two counts of child exploitation (both level 4 felonies), possession of child pornography (level 5 felony) and possession of child pornography (level 6 felony).

Law enforcement agencies initially became aware of Carpenter's online activity two years ago when he utilized peer-to-peer software to "knowingly receive and distribute child sexual abuse material."

Indiana State Police proceeded to obtain a cell phone belonging to Carpenter that reportedly contained hundreds of images and several videos depicting child porn.

Investigators also determined that Carpenter had reportedly generated multiple videos featuring a naked child in a shower.

"These videos show Carpenter concealing a camera in multiple locations near the shower to capture video of the child’s genitals and pubic region," court documents said.

Carpenter will also be required to register as a sex offender and ordered to pay $76,000 in restitution fees to the victims.
