INDIANAPOLIS — State Police detectives are interviewing a person possibly connected to a road rage shooting and crash incident on Interstate 65 that killed a driver earlier this week.

According to Indiana State Police, a person who may be connected to Wednesday's fatal shooting that caused a car to crash into a pond along I-65 is now being interviewed by detectives at an Indianapolis hospital.

The road rage shooting, crash

ISP responded to a car crash incident Wednesday afternoon on the southeast side of Indianapolis along I-65 near County Line Road north of Greenwood.

Dispatchers began receiving calls in the early afternoon that a road rage incident on 65 North had led to gunfire. Simultaneously, police got reports of a car that had run off the roadway and crashed into a pond.

According to ISP, the driver of the car that crashed into the pond was ejected before hitting the water. That driver, later identified as 35-year-old Ryan Hawkins, was pronounced dead on scene.

State Police announced on Thursday morning that Hawkins had suffered a gunshot wound in addition to injuries sustained in the crash.

ISP said that, within minutes, ISP and IFD divers were in the water to search for more victims. However, no one was found and troopers do not believe anyone else was in the car. Several lanes of I-65 northbound were closed near the 102-mile marker during the investigation.
