PLAINFIELD, Ind. — A man attempted to drive through an intersection police had closed to investigate a crash in Plainfield last week.

According to an affidavit for probable cause filed Monday, police were redirecting traffic away from the intersection of East Main Street and Smith Road in Plainfield around 8:53 p.m. on Friday. At that time, a silver 2015 Subaru Forester approached the scene.

Police reported that the driver of the car pulled "all of the way up to the crime scene tape, despite there being a good amount of barricades and police vehicles diverting traffic away from this area."

According to court documents, the driver, who was later identified as David J. Edison, exhibited slurred speech and had bloodshot eyes while police spoke with him.

Law enforcement indicated Edison was resistant to their orders. Police asked him to exit his vehicle, and he refused to do so.

Officers then attempted to forcibly remove Edison from the car, and he held the steering wheel to resist being pulled out. Per police records, officers eventually removed him from the car and placed him in handcuffs.

Plainfield paramedics checked on Edison to ensure he did not need any medical attention. While medics took his vitals, investigators spoke with Edison.

Law enforcement reported that Edison could not sit up on his own. One officer allowed Edison to lean on his leg while speaking with him.

Police did not subject Edison to any field sobriety tests because they were concerned for his safety.

Edison did end up taking a Portable Breath Test (PBT). According to court records, the PBT revealed Edison had a BrAC of .22. Police then took him to a local hospital for a blood draw.

Edison has been preliminarily charged with two misdemeanors — resisting law enforcement and operating while intoxicated.

The police's affidavit did not explicitly confirm what crash scene Edison attempted to drive through. Previous reporting indicates a fatal crash involving a Plainfield police officer and an elderly couple occurred at the intersection shortly before Edison arrived in the area.

Edison appeared in court for an initial hearing on Tuesday. No additional information on Edison's case has been made available via Indiana's public court reporting system.
