2 injured during shooting involving South Bend police officer

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Two people were injured during a shooting involving a South Bend police officer early Sunday morning.

According to a South Bend Police Department Facebook post, officers were called to the area of Washington and Wellington Streets around 4:20 a.m. on a report of a disturbance involving a crowd of people.

One police officer at the scene reported that shots had been fired in the area. In response to the shots that were fired, the officer discharged his department-issued gun.

One male was struck by gunfire during the incident. He was taken to a hospital to have his wounds treated.

A female also suffered injuries during the incident, but police do not believe she was shot. She was still taken to local hospital for treatment.

Per SBPD, no officers were injured during the incident. The officer that fired his gun has been placed on administrative leave in compliance with the department's policy.

The St. Joseph County Police Department is leading the investigation of the incident. Once the St. Joseph County Police Department is done examining the shooting, it will turn the facts, evidence and statements it gathers over to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office for review.

SBPD will also conduct an internal investigation to ensure the officer's actions complied with department policy, procedures and training.
