INDIANAPOLIS -- Drivers traveling through downtown Indy near Capitol Avenue will have to follow several detours starting Friday morning while construction continues on a brand-new hospital.

Beginning Friday around 8:30 a.m., lane closures will be in effect along Capitol Avenue between 16th and 13th Streets due to the ongoing construction of Indiana University Health's new hospital that is being built downtown. While construction has already been underway in the area for some time, IU Health said in a statement that "unexpected" utility work has led to the full closures.

The construction will also affect IndyGo operations in the area, with multiple routes having to follow detours. More information about which specific IndyGo routes will be affected can be found online here.

IU Health said all entrances to IU Health Methodist Hospital will remain accessible while urging commuters passing through the area to leave earlier to allow enough time to reach their destinations.

Drivers wishing to visit the Starbucks located at 13th Street and Capitol Avenue can do so by traveling west on 13th Street to bypass the roadwork.

IU Health confirmed the closures are expected to last around two weeks. Construction of the new downtown hospital is expected to be finished by the end of 2027.
