INDIANAPOLIS -- A Lafayette man has been sentenced to federal prison after an August 2023 traffic stop in Kokomo led to the discovery of more than 450 grams of methamphetamine.

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Indiana, 44-year-old Kyle Lee Stacy was sentenced to 10 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, after he pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.

On Aug. 17, 2023, officers with the Kokomo Police Department conducted a traffic stop after Stacy committed multiple traffic violation. During the stop, a canine alerted to the presence of a controlled substance coming from the driver's side of Stacy's vehicle.

When police searched the vehicle, law enforcement discovered 459.8 grams of pure methamphetamine in a black lunch bag. The release said that Stacy sent a text message before the traffic stop, telling the person that he had "a pound of dope" on him.

This comes after Stacy had prior felony convictions for burglary, theft, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and methamphetamine possession.

“The federal prison sentence imposed against this drug dealer demonstrates that there will be serious consequences for those who traffic in deadly drugs with utter disregard for human life,” Zachary A. Myers, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, said in the release. “Our federal prosecutors are committed to working closely with our partners including the DEA and Kokomo Police Department to get dealers off the streets of every community.”
