MUNCIE, Ind. — Court documents reveal that Muncie police officers were searching a reportedly stolen vehicle when they uncovered a grenade in a backpack leading to the bomb squad being called and businesses being evacuated.

Randal Bruce Moon Jr., 38, of Indianapolis was arrested in connection to the incident on preliminary charges of auto theft and possession of paraphernalia.

According to court documents, Muncie police were searching for a U-Haul pickup truck that was reported stolen when the truck was spotted driving southbound on N. Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd at approximately 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police ended up pulling over the vehicle on Madison Street with the pickup coming to a stop at Rich gas station.

According to court documents, Moon claimed his father had paid for the U-Haul pickup. Police reported finding a syringe on Moon and took him into custody.

During a search of the pickup, an officer reported finding a "military-style grenade" inside a backpack. As a precaution, police called in the Delaware County Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit and evacuated the Rich gas station along with the Save-On Liquor located next door.

The EOD team cleared the scene without issue and the Muncie police officers continued their search of the pickup which allegedly uncovered further drug paraphernalia.

Court documents reveal that investigators also learned that a trailer loaded with lawn equipment left at a residence in Muncie was also linked to Moon. The trailer was reported stolen out of Marion County.

The Delaware County Prosecutor's Office will decide final charges in this case.
