INDIANAPOLIS – A mother and daughter were asleep in their west side residence when the daughter heard gunshots—and the mother realized she’d been hit.

Officers were dispatched around 12:50 a.m. to the 6600 block of Sunbury Drive for a reported shooting.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the mother and daughter were sleeping when gunfire woke the daughter up. She asked her mother if she’d heard the gunshots; her mother said she didn’t.

However, the mother soon realized she’d been hit in the buttocks; a bullet had gone through the wall and hit her. Police at the scene initially described it as a "graze" wound, although IMPD later clarified she suffered a gunshot wound.

The woman's daughter drove her to a hospital in Danville. Family members said she was later transferred to an Indianapolis hospital.

The shooting remains under investigation.
