LAWRENCE, Ind. — One man is dead after IMPD SWAT officers attempted to serve a search warrant at a Lawrence motel.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting occurred at the Park Terrace Motel in the 9000 block of Pendleton Pike at roughly 10:35 a.m.

The Lawrence Police Department confirmed that IMPD is the lead agency in the incident.

No police officers were harmed in the shooting.

IMPD said narcotic detectives, with the assistance of SWAT, were attempting to serve a warrant at the motel on a wanted suspect who was known to be armed and dangerous. After police announced their presence and didn't get a response from the suspect inside the motel room, SWAT breached the room where the suspect reportedly grabbed a firearm.

Police said officers got into a struggle with the suspect over the firearm and two SWAT officers ended up opening fire and shooting the suspect.

The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital but ended up being pronounced dead.

"No one wants to be here today and we wish we weren't here. Our condolences go out to the family. It's a human life, regardless of the circumstances that lead us here today," said IMPD Chief Chris Bailey.

Police said a woman was also in the motel room. She allegedly complied with police orders and wasn't injured. She is currently being detained as part of the investigation.

"We'd prefer people would just comply with orders officers are given. They were serving a valid and signed search warrant. There were multiple opportunities to comply with the officers' commands," said Bailey.

Although the incident took place in Lawrence, IMPD officers were the only ones involved in the incident.

The shooting follows a violent and deadly week around Indianapolis and Lawrence.

"This has been a really tough week for our city and community and officers and incidents like this don't help things. Nonetheless, I'm thankful none of our officers were injured," said Assistant Chief Michael Wolley.

"I'm also grateful our officers are okay. This is another example of the dangerous work they do on behalf of our city," said Bailey.

Body cameras were worn and equipped during the incident, IMPD said.

The deceased has not been identified at this time.

The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation.

A separate administrative investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs. The two SWAT officers who fired their guns have been placed on administrative leave as is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting investigation.

The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory hearing for any attempted use of deadly force against a person. This occurs after the conclusion of the criminal process.

The Police Officer Support Team (POST) responded to provide peer support for officers. The IMPD Chaplain’s Office responded to assist those involved.

The IMPD Victims Assistance unit responded to assist officers and detectives.

Anyone with information is asked to call. Detective Sgt. Mark Prater at the homicide office by calling (317) 327-3475.  Alternatively, anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at (317) 262-TIPS.
