INDIANAPOLIS -- One man is dead following a shooting that damaged multiple homes on Indy's near northwest side.
While most of the city slept around 3:30 a.m., IMPD was called to this neighborhood near 28th and MLK and found a man shot to death inside a home on Udell Street.
On Wednesday, officials with the Marion County Coroner's Office identified the person who died as 19-year-old Jaleal Daeshawn Hurt.
"Indianapolis is waking up to violence. You know a family is left heartbroken," said IMPD officer Drew Brown.
In the daylight, the screen on one home was visibly torn open by bullets that ripped holes in that home's siding. Gunfire also damaged the home next door, where party supplies still decorate the front door.
"We've been asked now to go over on Udell and try to keep the peace because we don't know what happened and we want to try to prevent any retaliation," said Reverend Charles Harrison.
Reverend Harrison said IMPD requested the Ten Point Coalition to keep an eye on Udell, which is just a few blocks south of his church.
The area remains a hot spot for violence. There have already been six other homicides this year less than a mile away from the overnight killing.
"This is a hot place. It's hot. MLK has been, for almost the whole 25 years I've been doing Ten Point, a challenging area," said Harrison. "So I'm not really surprised that it happened, because of how hot this area is."
While police didn't provide a motive for the early morning homicide, they once again urged the public to do their part in preventing violence by keeping their emotions under control.
"We speak on this time and time again, that no disagreement should lead to gunfire. We shouldn't have families shattered, because of a lack of conflict resolution in a healthy way," said Brown.
IMPD says the investigation into the homicide remains ongoing.
