RICHMOND, Ind. — The Richmond Police Department is investigating after a crash left a bicyclist seriously injured on Saturday.

According to Richmond PD, officers were called around 1:27 p.m. to the first block of S. 37th Street. Upon arrival, they had discovered that a bicycle had collided with a white Jeep, driven by 46-year-old Natalie Barnes-Sparks.

The bicyclist was immediately transported to an area hospital for medical treatment. Police said they then arrested Barnes-Sparkes on the following charges:

  • Operating while intoxicated on a controlled substance (Class A misdemeanor)
  • Operating while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury (Level 6 felony)
  • Possession of methamphetamine (Level 6 felony)

The vehicle's passenger was also arrested on a methamphetamine possession charge, as well as possession of a controlled substance (Class A misdemeanor).

RPD Chief Kyle Weatherly spoke on the matter, stating the risk of driving while under the influence is "never acceptable".

"It endangers lives and puts our entire community at risk," he said. "Thanks to the prompt response and diligence of our well-trained officers, we were able to manage this situation swiftly. We urge everyone to make responsible choices and avoid getting behind the wheel if they’re impaired. Our priority is the safety of all our residents, and we will continue to take every necessary step to ensure our roads remain safe.”

A booking photo for Barnes-Sparks has not yet been provided.
