INDIANAPOLIS — A man barricaded himself in a vehicle on the east side of Indianapolis Saturday night.

Public emergency reporting systems indicate Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers first responded to the 5500 block of East 34th Street around 6:20 p.m. Police at the scene told FOX59 and CBS4 that, when officers arrived in the area, they encountered an adult male who had barricaded himself in a car.

Investigators believe the man in the car may have been shot at before officers arrived — though he was not hit by any gunfire. Police also reported that there was a gun in the car the man had barricaded himself in, but it was not fired.

An IMPD special weapons and tactics (SWAT) unit was called to the scene. IMPD indicated that an hour and two minutes passed between the time officers arrived and the moment the SWAT team disengaged.

The man was transported from the scene to Eskenazi Hospital after the incident concluded because police believed he might have been overdosing.

IMPD indicated that it does not believe the incident poses any ongoing threat to area residents.

As of this article's publication, no additional information on the incident had been made available.
