KOKOMO, Ind. — A Kokomo man is under arrest after sticking up a liquor store for a bottle of alcohol and leading police on a short foot chase.

Tremel Black, 38, is charged with armed robbery, a Level 3 felony; resisting law enforcement, a Level 6 felony, and escape via removing or disabling a GPS monitor, a Level 6 felony.

According to the Kokomo Police Department, Black entered Soupley's Wine & Spirits on E. Markland Avenue at approximately 3:11 p.m. on Saturday and demanded money and alcohol.

Police said Black claimed to have a handgun but never displayed the weapon during the robbery.

After fleeing the store with a bottle of alcohol in a paper bag, police spotted the suspect one block north of the store and briefly chased him on foot.

Black was arrested after a "brief physical altercation" with officers, the police department said. No weapon was found on his person.

Court records show Black was charged with armed robbery, auto theft and robbery in Howard County in 2019. He accepted a plea deal pleading guilty to auto theft and robbery.

Black was sentenced to five years in prison followed by one year on supervised probation as part of his plea deal. But, in June 2023, Black successfully petitioned to be placed in the Community Transition Program and released from prison on probation.

Black would end up breaking his probation orders, however, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Black would end up being placed on work release, according to court records, which he was still serving at the time of his alleged robbery of Soupley's.

If convicted of his Level 3 felony, Black could face up to 16 years in prison.
