INDIANAPOLIS — A portion of Rockville Road was closed on the city's west side due to an "unknown substance" on the roadway.

Around 4 p.m., Wayne Township Fire Department asked drivers to avoid the area of Rockville (U.S. 36) and Country Club Road. The westbound direction of Rockville was temporarily closed due to an "unknown substance" being on the road.

The fire department said hazardous material sampling and identification were underway to determine the origin of the substance.

The Indianapolis Fire Department decontamination team, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, IEMS, Marion County Health and Hazmat and Indy DPW also responded to investigate the "solid, dirt-like substance."

"There is no large threat to public health," the fire department said.

Around 5:13 p.m., WTFD said Rockville Road would remain closed heading westbound for several more hours as crews remained on the scene for cleanup.

The Wayne Township Fire Department confirmed on Facebook around 8:40 p.m. Thursday that no hazard threat was located.

"After carefully collecting samples and technical examination of the substance, no hazard threat was found. The road will remain closed until the material can be cleaned up," the post said.
