NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- Roads are opening up in Noblesville, as their State Road 32 project begins to wrap up.

Phase 3 just finished with one more section left to go. Orange barrels and construction vehicles are clearing out of the historic square, opening up traffic into the heart of downtown.

This comes after months of closures.

With a community over 200 years old, there's also century-old infrastructure and drainage systems that come along with that.

"INDOT partnered with us to come in and do a complete road rehab to dig out old surfaces that were old bricks underneath there, redo sidewalks, redo curbs,” said Mayor Chris Jensen.

Construction workers even dug up old gas tanks, which thankfully didn't cause much of a delay.

A major goal for this project was to make the area safer for people walking around and make it accessible to all.

“Across the state of Indiana, making things more ADA compliant is really important and it's something that we are kind of including more in our projects,” said Kyleigh Cramer with INDOT.

The blockages began in April for the project, which impacted restaurants and shops in the square for the last four months.

“For a second there, it was a little bit slower, but ever since it opened up, we've got our business back,” said Kyle Byrd, a manager for Uptown Cafe in the square.

Throughout the construction, the city worked with their small businesses to help keep them afloat.

Now all that's left is the final touches.

“It heads to the west and we saw this morning, there are some lane restrictions,” said Jensen. “I'll tell you, after you spend several months with a full closure, few lane restrictions we'll be able to get through."
