Safe Haven Baby Boxes coming to Wayne Township fire stations

INDIANAPOLIS — The Wayne Township Fire Department is hosting a news conference and blessing at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Station 84, signifying the installation of Safe Haven Baby Boxes at its four stations that do not currently have one.

This will make it the first department in the nation to install baby boxes at all firehouses.

Per WTFD, the installation of the baby boxes is made possible by private donations. The project allows parents to safely and confidentially surrender their newborns. They said this helps prevent infant abandonment, allowing for children to be provided a safe and loving home.

As of this article's publication, the most recent time a newborn was surrendered to WTFD was in March 2023, at Station 84—right where the conference and blessing is being held. This also happened to be where the township's first baby box was installed, back in 2021.
