CARSON CITY, Nev. — A 20-year-old is dead after drowning at Whale Beach on the East Shores of Lake Tahoe, Nev. on Sunday.
According to the Carson City Sheriff's Office, dispatch received a 911 call around 2:15 p.m. on Sunday reporting that a man was drowning at Whale Beach. Medics from the North Tahoe Fire Department arrived to the scene, finding Owen McDonough of Villa Hills, Ky. struggling in the water.
Reportedly, McDonough was swimming with friends to offshore rocks. CCSO said he was overcome by rough waters and disappeared under the surface.
Medics and bystanders alike attempted to resuscitate McDonough, but were unfortunately unable to do so.
Indiana University confirmed that McDonough was one of their students. IU Hockey wrote in a statement that they "...[mourn] the loss of student broadcaster and friend, Owen McDonough. Owen helped with pregame, postgame, intermission shows, as well as media tech and color commentary this past season. He will be greatly missed..."
CCSO said that McDonough was not wearing a personal flotation device. They also reported that alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor for his death.
A photo for McDonough has not been released at this time.
