MEDFORD, Ind. — One woman is dead after a suspected drunk driver slammed into a disabled golf cart early Wednesday.

According to the Delaware County Sheriff's Office, two women and a man were out riding around on a golf cart at 2:30 a.m. on 550 South, just east of US 35, in a rural area south of Medford.

The golf cart ended up malfunctioning, leading the man to leave the two women behind to go and fetch his pickup truck so that he could tow the immobile golf cart.

At 2:45 a.m., a caller contacted 911 due to being concerned after spotting a person pushing a golf cart. Shortly afterward, they heard a loud bang.

Deputies arrived on scene and discovered that the man returning with the pickup truck was traveling at a high rate of speed before colliding with the golf cart. His Dodge Ram 2500 was found 100 yards out in a field.

Police said alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash.

The man and surviving woman were taken in for questioning, the sheriff's department said, but no arrests have been announced at this time.

The deceased woman was pronounced dead on scene. Her identity has not yet been released by the coroner.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Delaware County Sheriff's Department.
