INDIANAPOLIS — A loaded gun was found inside a student's backpack Monday at an Indianapolis middle school, officials have confirmed.
School officials sent a notification to parents Monday afternoon intending to "dispel any rumors" regarding an incident that happened earlier in the day at Chapel Hill 7th and 8th Grade Center, a Wayne Township middle school located along 10th Street on Indy's west side.
According to the district, school administration investigated allegations that a student had a loaded handgun in their backpack. A school resource officer was then able to secure the weapon without incident, district officials said.
"We all play a vital role in maintaining a safe school environment," the school said. "Please take this opportunity to encourage your child to share any unsafe situation or behavior with a teacher or trusted adult: 'If you see something, say something.'"
The school added that any student in possession of any weapon while on school property is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct and Indiana law. They said the incident will be handled accordingly.
