LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ind. — A Lawrence County man has been arrested after a fishing excursion turned deadly.
According to a press release, the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office was called to a rural area near Winegar Road — which is close to the Lawrence-Orange County Line — after receiving a report pertaining to a deceased person on Saturday night. LCSO later contacted Indiana State Police and the Orange County Sheriff's Office for assistance with the case.
After a preliminary investigation, law enforcement determined the deceased individual — Timothy Tolbert of Mitchell — was fishing in the area with a female from Lawrence County. The pair was later approached by one of their acquaintances, 46-year-old Homer Smith of Mitchell.

An altercation between Tolbert and Smith later occurred, resulting in Smith striking Tolbert in the head with his fist multiple times, per ISP. Tolbert did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies ultimately located Smith at his mother's residence. He was subsequently transported to the Orange County Jail and is now being held without bond.
Smith has been preliminarily charged with one count of murder.
