INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis metro police have arrested a 27-year-old man on multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated causing catastrophic injury, after Tuesday afternoon's crash that injured 8 on the near east side.

Public police reporting systems indicate Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to the area of East New York Street and North State Avenue on a report of a crash involving serious bodily injury around 3:34 p.m.

IMPD initially reported that at least one person died in the crash. Police later indicated that the individual they believed to be deceased was transported to a local hospital. That person, according to IMPD, was revived by medical personnel and is now in critical condition.

The Indianapolis Fire Department has reported that eight total people were injured in the crash — six of which were children. Three of the injured kids are in critical condition, and the other three are in stable condition.

Per IFD, the two adults involved in the crash are in stable condition.

All six children and one adult were in one vehicle. The second car involved in the crash was occupied by a male, according to IFD.

The male driver, who has been identified as a 27-year-old, was piloting a Silver sports car at the time of the crash. He was transported from the scene to Eskenazi Hospital.

According to a police report obtained by FOX59/CBS4, officers have arrested Tramayne Deron Harris on multiple preliminary charges, including driving while intoxicated causing catastrophic injury as well as reckless driving.

The driver of the vehicle with six children in it was a 34-year-old woman, per IFD. She was driving a Silver Ford Explorer and was transported from the scene to IU Methodist Hospital.

Two of the three children who were critically injured were transported to Riley Hospital for Children. The third critical juvenile — a 14-year-old — was transported to IU Methodist.

IFD indicated that it does not know the ages of the children who were transported to Riley Hospital. The three children who were not critically injured were two, 12 and four years old, respectively.

According to IFD, the driver of the sports car was headed north on State Avenue and the female motorist was moving east on New York Street when the collision occurred.

Area roadways were closed for more than four hours while crews investigated and cleaned up the crash. At 8:13 p.m., IMPD reported that traffic was flowing normally.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
