INDIANAPOLIS -- Coming after an unprecedented decision by current President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race, the Indiana Secretary of State's office provided information regarding certification deadlines in the state for the Democratic Party before November's general election.

According to a news release from the Indiana Secretary of State's office, the Indiana State Party Chair of the Democratic Party has until noon on Sept. 10 to certify the names of the party's candidates for president and vice president of the United States. This is the deadline that applies to all major political parties.

Biden announced on Sunday that he would step aside from November's election. Biden then threw his support behind Kamala Harris, his vice president, to be the Democratic nominee for president.

According to the Indiana Election Code, if a presidential, or vice presidential, nominee ceases to be a candidate before the ticket is officially certified, the successor is required to be certified in the same manner as the original nominee. The successor's ticket would then be printed on all ballots in the state of Indiana.

However, if the presidential, or vice presidential, nominee ceases to be a candidate after the ticket is certified, the original nominee's name would remain on the ballot. But, any vote cast in the election for the original nominee would be considered a vote for the new ticket, according to the Indiana Election Code.

Officials said Sept. 16 is the deadline for counties in the state of Indiana to print ballots.
