INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has launched a death investigation on the west side of Indianapolis.
According to a press release, officers were dispatched to the 5700 block of West Ray Street on a report of a person shot. When police arrived at the scene, they located an adult male with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.
Law enforcement indicated that victim was transported from the scene to a local hospital in critical condition. The man was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
IMPD's homicide detectives are investigating the incident, though police have reported that the circumstances surrounding the shooting are unclear. Detectives are still attempting to determine whether or not the victim sustained self-inflicted injuries.
Police are confident that they have identified all of the individuals involved in the incident. Because of the unusual situation IMPD has yet to rule the shooting a homicide or a suicide. For now, police have dubbed the incident a death investigation.
The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to the scene to help police collect evidence. The Marion County Coroner will also determine the man's exact manner and cause of death.
The coroner's office will also release the decedent's name once his family has been properly notified of his death.
