Car pulled from creek on north side of Indianapolis; Driver in stable condition

INDIANAPOLIS — A car was pulled from a creek on the north side of Indianapolis on Sunday.

Public emergency reporting systems indicate Indianapolis Fire Department crews were dispatched to the intersection of West 79th Street and and North Meridian Street on a report of a car crash involving entrapment. According to an IFD Facebook post, when crews arrived at the scene, they found a vehicle in nearby Williams Creek.

The firefighters that made it to the scene first requested assistance from IFD's water rescue task force. Upon its arrival, the water rescue task force secured the vehicle with a tether to keep it from moving further downstream.

IFD reported that the driver of the car, who was identified as a 65-year-old man, was alert and oriented. Within 10 minutes of their arrival, divers helped the driver of out of the vehicle. The man was then loaded onto a stokes basket and carried up a hill through a wooded area.

The man was transported from the scene to a local hospital in stable condition, per IFD.

Witnesses told firefighters at the scene that they had seen the man driving at a high rate of speed before he crashed. Officials believe the man traveled 500 feet through a wooded area and hit two trees before ending up in the creek.
