INDIANAPOLIS -- A local pedestrian safety group is concerned about an east side intersection after three people were hit at East New York Street and North Sherman Drive in the last few weeks.

"The fact that there were three all within a short period of time at a location where we haven't seen activity before is definitely concerning," said Eric Holt, the founder of Indy Pedestrian Safety Crisis.

Holt said the intersection of East New York Street and North Sherman Drive has been on his radar in recent weeks after three people were struck at the intersection this month alone.

Police reports from IMPD show one of the three incidents was a hit-and-run.

And now, Holt said he wants the city to step up.

"It's alarming, shocking, and disappointing," said Holt. "I've had a lot of great disappointment in the last two years of doing this and just how little I've seen the city do as a response to this."

FOX59/CBS4 sent crews out to North Sherman Drive and East New York Street to see what was going on. The crews saw drivers cutting off other cars in the middle of the intersection, speeding and running red lights.

Numerous people were seen jaywalking across the street as well.

People who live in the area said the problem is only getting worse and things need to change at this intersection.

"We see everything," said Chris Wright, who lives in the area. "People burning their tires up. Just going 100 miles up through here. So it's a bottleneck every time you come up through here."

"Traffic around here is fast and nobody wants to slow down," added resident Dillon Day.

And across the city, Holt said the problem only seems to be getting worse.

Using data from law enforcement, he said this year Indianapolis has had more than 230 pedestrian or bicyclist-involved incidents compared to only about 150 at this time last year.

"Sadly it does seem like things are getting worse and it definitely points to the fact as a city we haven't really tackled this in the ways that we need to be tackling," said Holt.

FOX59/CBS4 has reached out to City-County Councilor Kristin Jones whose district covers North Sherman Drive and East New York Street about the issue. The councilor has not provided a response at the time this article was published.

But FOX59/CBS4 did hear back from City-County Councilor Jesse Brown, whose district is nearby.

“Alongside many of my peers on the council, I'm a firm advocate for vision zero policies that would reimagine our roads and insists that not a single fatality should happen on the streets on Indianapolis," said Brown.
