INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating after a person was shot and killed on the northeast side of Indianapolis Sunday morning.

IMPD officers were first called to the 3600 block of East 39th Street around 8 a.m. on a report of a person down. Upon arriving at the scene, police identified a victim with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. The victim, later identified as an adult male, was pronounced dead at the scene.

As of this article's publication, IMPD had not named any suspects in the case.

"Obviously, the city has spent a significant number of resources towards technology, but nothing beats when we have witness cooperation," IMPD public information officer William Young said during a media briefing. "We have seen that by the number of homicide arrests and aggravated assaults we've made."

FOX59 and CBS4 spoke with a woman who claimed she found the man lying dead next to a mailbox near her apartment complex. She said she heard gunshots around 9 or 10 p.m. on Saturday night, and when she woke up the next morning, she found the man lying dead about 30 feet from her doorway.

The woman said she saw what she believed to be gunshot wounds to the man's head and back. She immediately called 911 around 8 a.m. Sunday.

"It’s very early on in the investigation," Young said. "We are still trying to piece together exactly what occurred. We are not sure how long this individual had been outside. We will be out here trying to speak with neighbors and so forth. Anybody could have heard shots being fired through the night. We are asking folks to come forward with any information."

Police encourage those with information on the shooting to contact detective Ryan Clark at the IMPD Homicide Office at (317) 327-3475. Tipsters can also email Clark at Ryan.Clark@indy.gov.

Alternatively, anonymous tipsters can contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana by calling (317) 262-8477, using the P3tips mobile app or visiting www.CrimeTips.org. Anonymous tips that lead to felony arrests may be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000.

The Marion County Coroner's Office will release the decedent's name after his family has been properly notified of his death.
