INDIANAPOLIS — A woman is in stable condition Thursday night after being shot at a near northwest Indy park.

The incident began as an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer was investigating a hit-and-run crash just before 8 p.m. near 38th and Michigan. The officer had pulled over the suspect in that hit-and-run in the 3700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Street, IMPD said.

While the officer was waiting for backup to help arrest the driver, he reportedly heard gunshots and a loud argument in nearby Bertha Ross Park. The hit-and-run suspect was released as police responded to the park.

Upon arrival, park rangers and IMPD officers found an adult female who had been shot in the lower extremities. Officers applied a tourniquet to the woman before EMS transported her to a local hospital. She is currently listed in stable condition, according to IMPD Capt. Mark McCardia.

While treating the victim, IMPD said officers saw possible shooting suspects get into a car and flee the scene. Officers initiated a chase that ended soon after when the suspect car reportedly crashed near E. 46th Street and Carvel Avenue.

Capt. McCardia said on scene that several people found inside the suspect car were taken into custody for questioning. However, IMPD said it is not known if they played a role in the shooting or if any weapons were recovered.
